In recent years, the number of mountain accidents in Japan is increasing, and it can be difficult for the victims to request rescue by themselves because they may be injured or in poor health condition. In addition, about 20% of mountain accident sites are located in areas where mobile phone cannot be utilized, making it urgent to secure communication means for requesting rescue.
In an existing study for supporting outdoor monitoring, the proposed system has utilized LPWA, which is a wireless communication technology for long-distance data communication with low power consumption, to track the location information of mountain climbers. However, there is a challenge for supporting a wide-range communication in mountains, and hence multiple relay stations need to be installed for observing the location information and health status of the climbers.
Therefore, this study designs and develops a mesh network system that makes it possible to observe the condition of victims even in areas where the wireless signal for cellular communication cannot arrive by combining smartwatches with LPWA communication modules for supporting functions of measuring health-related information. In this proposed system, the communication node owned by the climbers serves as the relay station for supporting efficient data collection without installing multiple relay stations. |
