A study on shadowing caused by a metallic object placed near LCX antenna of 920MHz-band RFID system

(in English) Wireless Internet of Things (IoT) in the factory is progressing, and it is necessary to cover long, linear wireless communication areas on production lines. Leaky Coaxial Cable (LCX) antennas are used to cover such communication areas. In the production line area, metallic objects are expected to be placed near the antennas, and shadowing cause unstable communications. This paper describes the shadowing effect caused by a metallic object which is placed close to 920MHz-band RFID reader/writer antenna. Two kinds of antennas, a conventional patch antenna and a leaky coaxial cable (LCX) antenna, are examined by electro-magnetic (EM) simulation. It shows that the LCX antenna has smaller shadowed area than the conventional patch antenna.
