Measurement of Laryngeal Prominence During Swallowing Using Magnetic Sensors

(in English) Swallowing is one of the most important functions for a healthy life.
However, if the swallowing function deteriorates for some reason, it may cause serious diseases such as deterioration of nutritional status and aspiration pneumonia.
Various of rehabilitation are performed for patients with dysphagia, and it is useful to have an objective index that expresses the "goodness" of swallowing movements.
In this study, the authors attempted to estimate the skin movement near the laryngeal prominence using a neodymium magnet and two 3D magnetic sensors.
As a result of computer simulations and experiments, it was found that approximate movements can be measured, although there are some errors.
Especially, rotational motion measurements provided proper results for swallowing timing.
It is necessary to consider further improvement of accuracy and interpretation of measurement results.
