Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) MAVLink is a lightweight communication protocol used between drones and ground stations to transmit drone status and control commands sent from ground stations. MAVLink only has a function to detect message tampering and is not equipped with sufficient security functions, making it vulnerable to data eavesdropping, unauthorized use, and tracking. In this study, we proposed a secure communication scheme that uses authenticated cryptography to encrypt the payload and authenticate the message. In order to evaluate the proposed method, several AEAD algorithms (AES-GCM, ASCON, ChaCha20-Poly1305) and The methods from previous studies (ChaCha20 + SHA256, AES-CTR + SHA256, AES-CBC + SHA256) were implemented in MAVLink communication and evaluated in terms of processing time and resource consumption. The results were evaluated in terms of processing time and resource consumption. The experimental results show that
ChaCha20-Poly1305 is the most efficient in terms of processing time, and ASCON is the most efficient in terms of resource consumption. However, both ASCON and ChaCha20-Poly1305 have enough memory for 45.43% and 52.82% of the resource consumption, respectively, while ASCON and ChaCha20-Poly1305 are the most efficient in terms of processing time. As for processing time, ASCON and ChaCha20-Poly1305 were 3.07ms and 1.79ms, respectively, and ChaCha20-Poly1305 takes about 0.6 times longer than ASCON. Therefore, the integration of ChaCha20-Poly1305 into MAVLink can be achieved without affecting the responsiveness and performance of the communication, while reducing the resource consumption. The conclusion is that incorporating ChaCha20-Poly1305 into MAVLink can ensure message confidentiality and integrity while reducing resource consumption, without affecting communication responsiveness or performance.
