Study of application of DDS to IoT DEP and performance evaluation

(in English) Internet of Things (IoT) services are currently being introduced in various fields. This has led to a marked increase in the number of connected IoT devices. To accommodate them efficiently, a platform that lightens the processing is considered necessary. One such platform is the IoT Data Exchange Platform (IoT DEP) standardized by ISO/IEC JTC1/SC41, which is an IoT platform architecture that actively utilizes Pub/Sub type communication. The author and others have been studying a method to realize IoT DEP by connecting MQTT distributed brokers in a virtual ring as a communication method between connection points (Nodal Points). However, there is concern that this method may increase the delay time on the virtual ring. Therefore, we are considering a direct connection method using DDS between Nodal Points, which does not require a broker. In this paper, we examine the application of DDS for realizing IoT DEP and evaluate its performance, and show that Flatdata has superior results in terms of latency for message data of 1400 bytes or less.
