Distance correction of X-band radar by laser lidar

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Radars are used to detect ships, structures, drones. Radars installed on ships and on land radars are placed on top of ships or on land to monitor the position of ships and land for defense applications such as Aegis systems etc. Radar emits microwaves toward an object and measures the distance when the microwave is reflected from the object. Because it uses high-power microwaves with longer wavelengths than visible light, it can detect distant objects. A general radar is a pulse radar, which emits radio waves from a transmitter and receives reflected waves from a receiver. Transmitter performance is determined by frequency, output power, pulse width, and pulse repetition frequency. However, known uncertainties such as height differences and clutter between the radar and the object being measured can introduce errors of tens of meters. One of the largest errors is the offset distance. This error is caused by the radar body, the waveguide length of the measuring instrument, the software, and so on. Therefore, in this research, we aim to improve the offset distance error of radar distance measurement by using distance measurement using laser light (laser lidar). Lidar is based on the same principle as radar, but uses light instead of radio waves. By using short-pulse light such as a fiber laser using an optical fiber, accurate directivity and narrow beam can be used for distance measurement. For this reason, lidar is used in some aircraft and satellite-based remote sensing. Therefore, in this study, we describe the correction of the offset distance error, which has one of the largest radar uncertainty, using a portable lidar using a laser.
