IRS (Inteligent Reflecting Surface) has attracted a lot of attention to expand the coverage of base stations (BS) in high frequency bands such as millimeter wave and terahertz. IRS can dynamically control the amplitudes and phases of reflected signals. Therefore, IRSs placed at appropriate locations can establish virtual line-of-sight (LOS) paths between a base station and a user equipment (UEs) even if there are obstacles between the base station and the UE. In this article, we propose an IRS placement method that utilizes the single reflection point between a base station and user equipment (UEs). The proposed method estimates the distribution of single reflection points and finds several maximum points of the estimated distribution. The optimal positions for IRSs are determined from the selected points. The proposed method is validated through simulation experiments in an outdoor multipath environment. |
