Since the channel is highly directional and line-of-sight, it is reasonable to assume that an eavesdropper is hard to fully access a free-space optical link between Alice and Bob without being found. Physical-layer cryptography and line-of-sight quantum key distribution (QKD) employ this assumption and hence could achieve much more improved key generation performance compared to the normal QKD schemes. Therefore, these schemes are expected to construct a global-scale QKD network using satellites. However, no feasibility studies for these schemes based on practical systems have been reported yet. This paper reports the feasibility study for these key-generation schemes over GEO-ground links using the method of link budget calculation, which is used for satellite laser communications, assuming the systems being developed in the on-going MIC R&D project. Based on the results, we investigate the range of acceptable assumption on the eavesdropper to perform the key generation and discuss the issues to be detailed for the realization of these key generation schemes. |
