[Invited Lecture] A standardization Trend of NTN in 3GPP

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In recent years, 5G, which can realize ultra-high speed, ultra-reliable and low latency, and massive-capacity wireless communication networks, is deploying all over the world. In addition, there is a trend to develop satellite communication networks that cover remote areas and areas where a sufficient terrestrial network is not available. Since 3GPP released the specifications of 5G system in Release 15, it has continued to study and develop specifications to enhance basic performances such as ultra-high reliability and low latency as well as to support various applications such as industrial IoT and V2X. As an application, specifications for Non-terrestrial Networks (NTN) such as satellite communications and HAPS has been developed. In addition to direct communications with smartphones outside the coverage area of the terrestrial networks, NTN can provide high-speed communication services for aircrafts and ships, seamless communications with terrestrial cellular systems, communication services during emergencies and disasters, and IoT communications services such as environmental measurement in rural areas. In 3GPP, NTN study was started in 2017, and the first NTN specifications were released as Release 17 in 2022. In the Release 17 NTN, techniques to support long propagation delay and fast movement of the satellite, such as enhanced HARQ, time-frequency synchronization using location information and enhanced handover, are adopted. Currently, it has worked on enhancements of NTN in Release 18 such as coverage enhancement and mobility enhancement. This paper describes NTN standardization trends especially RAN techniques in 3GPP.
