We evaluated the performance of Kotlin and Java programs, and thereafter, proposed a method to improve the performance of programs written in both of these languages. We executed micro-benchmarking of loop processing, such as for and while statements that constitute the fundamental functions of programming languages. The results indicated that the performance depends on the description methods even for the same semantics and the equal number of iterations. The performance can be classified into two groups: fast and slow. Performance was studied using two popular JVM implementations, and performance classifications occurred in both JVM implementations. Small differences in the bytecode yield variations in the JIT compiler behavior, thereby creating nonsmall performance variations. We proposed a method to improve the performance of Kotlin and Java programs by modifying the bytecodes in the slow-group to those in the fast-group. We evaluated the performance of the proposed method and demonstrated that it can improve the performance of the programs with the description methods in the slow-group to the same level as that obtained with the description methods in the fast-group. |
