Study of high availability VPN gateway with hardware accelerator

(in English) In recent years, the amount of VPN (Virtual Private Network) traffic has been increasing due to the spread of teleworking. We have been studying software implementations of VPN gateways, but with the increase in traffic volume, we are now considering the use of HW (hardware) accelerators such as FPGAs (field programmable gate arrays) and other HW accelerators to advance VPN gateways. VPN gateways using HW accelerators can offload some of the processing that is conventionally performed by the CPU, thereby improving processing performance. However, VPN gateways using HW accelerators have issues such as slow failure recovery times and increased power consumption associated with redundancy. Therefore, this study examines three types of redundancy configurations with different standby system states in VPN gateways using HW accelerators. The redundant pattern A is a method to standby with the circuit written to the accelerator, the redundant pattern B is a method to standby with power-on, the redundant pattern C is a method to standby with power-off. The recovery time and power consumption per unit for each method were measured in the actual environment. In our experimental environment, the recovery times for the redundant pattern A, B, and C were 103, 154, and 364 seconds, respectively. The average power consumption was 377 W regardless of the circuit write status. Simulation results based on the measurement results confirmed that redundant pattern A was the best in terms of recovery time, and redundant pattern C was the best in terms of power consumption.
