The output signal of a radio frequency (RF) amplifier used in a wireless system, for example, varies in amplitude and phase depending on the amplitude of the input and output signals due to the distortion characteristics of the circuit. It is important to understand how the I (in phase) and Q (quadrature phase) signals of the quadrature modulation are distorted by the nonlinear characteristics of RF amplifiers. In this report, the effects of amplitude-phase distortion of RF amplifiers on I and Q signals are first clarified. Next, the Saleh model, which is a typical behavioral model for expressing the distortion characteristics of RF amplifiers, is discussed. The Saleh model cannot reproduce the phenomenon that the polarity of phase distortion changes depending on the input signal level, which is often observed in actual RF amplifiers. To solve this problem, a term including the tanh function is added to express the characteristics including phase polarity switching. Finally, it is clarified how the AM-PM distortion characteristics change with and without the phase polarity switch. |
