For the past several decades, as a promising method for monitoring the soundness of optical fiber communication networks, distributed reflectivity sensing, which can measure the positions and reflectivities of poor connection points and other reflection points along optical fibers, has attracted considerable attention. Among various distributed reflectivity sensing techniques, we have been focusing on optical correlation-domain reflectometry (OCDR), which has random accessibility (high-speed measurement capability at any position along the sensing fiber), real-time operability, and cost efficiency (working with relatively inexpensive lasers). It is well known that Brillouin OCDR (BOCDR) for distributed strain and temperature sensing suffers from a trade-off relationship between spatial resolution and measurement range, and a double-modulation scheme was developed to mitigate this problem. In contrast, in OCDR, it was assumed that the spatial resolution is not affected by the measurement range. However, recently, it has been clarified both theoretically and experimentally that the spatial resolution of OCDR also suffers from a trade-off relationship with the measurement range. Thus, a technique for extending the measurement range while maintaining the spatial resolution of OCDR is important. In this work, we demonstrate that the measurement range of OCDR can also be extended while maintaining spatial resolution on the basis of the temporal gating scheme. |
