Real time detection of liquid using hetero-core optical fiber Kenta Suzuki, Shoichi Kubodera (Soka Univ.) OFT2023-16 |

In this paper, we evaluate a hetero-core optical fiber liquid detection sensor with a hetero-core insertion length of 9.1 mm. The sensor was fabricated by inserting and fusing a small section of no-core fiber into a single-mode optical fiber with a core diameter of 9 µm. The insertion length of the hetero-core section was investigated using eigenmode expansion analysis. When a general-purpose light source with a center wavelength of 1.31 μm is used, a hetero-core optical fiber with an insertion length of 9.1 mm is adopted because the coupling efficiency is maximized near the light source wavelength. Temporal changes in light intensity were obtained by repeatedly immersing the surface of the proposed sensor in a liquid. The experimental results show that the proposed sensor can be used for real-time monitoring of refractive index changes on the surface of the sensor by using light intensity-based measurement. |
