We report the design results of compact symmetric multimode Y junction for the 2-µm waveband. The proposed device achieves the desired function by using adiabatic mode-evolution of the supermodes. In general, structural change of a device based on adiabatic process must be gradual, which leads the device length long. Especially for the multimode devices, longer device length is required to suppress the loss and mode crosstalk for each mode. In our research, length of the mode-evolution region is greatly shortened by optimizing the taper structure based on the shortcuts to adiabaticity. We study on 2-mode and 4-mode devices and show the lengths of the mode-evolution region required to suppress the losses below 2% can be reduced to one-fifth and one-tenth, respectively, compared with the ones with linear tapers before optimization. |
