Study on 25Gb/s burst TIA

(in English) Network traffics are increasing due to the spread of remote work and streaming services. Therefore, optical access systems are required to have higher line rate and larger network capacity. Following the deployment of 10Gb/s-class PON(Passive Optical Network), 50G-PON is attracting attention. 50G-PON (50-Gigabit-capable PON) are defined with a single downstream transmission line rate of 50Gb/s and three upstream transmission line rates of 12.5, 25, or 50Gb/s. In this paper, we report the investigation result of 25Gb/s burst-mode TIA (TransImpedance Amplifier) for cost-effective 50G-PON OLT(Optical Line Terminal) receiver. Therefore, we used an inexpensive TO-CAN package for the optical module parts, although it has the disadvantage of being difficult to obtain high-frequency characteristics. We designed the TIA with a capacitor peaking circuit to compensate for the high-frequency characteristics and achieved sufficient bandwidth for receiving 25Gb/s signals. We assembled the TIA and a commercially available APD (Avalanche PhotoDiode) in the TO-CAN package and evaluated the burst bit error ratio performance of the ROSA (Receiver Optical SubAssembly) when receiving 25Gb/s burst signals. At the result, the minimum receiver sensitivity was -26.8dBm in OMA. The value is compliant with the 50G-PON N1-class specifications.
