A conical cavity-backed antenna with embedded multiple quarter-wave resonators (multiple QWRs) is proposed to enhance the 3-dB axial ratio bandwidth (ARBW) of the cavity-backed antenna. The circular polarization (CP) performance of the cavity-backed antenna was conventionally limited by the cavity resonance, the undesired cavity current, and the radiator’s CP behavior. This paper describes that the conical shape of the cavity prevents cavity resonance, while the multiple QWRs generate an additional current to support CP radiation, which reduces the AR level and enlarges the 3-dB ARBW. The prototype provided a wide impedance bandwidth of 93.83% (1.72–4.76 GHz) and wide axial ratio bandwidth of 83.75% (1.86–4.54 GHz) without radiator modification. |
