Extension of Communication Distance via Dielectric-Lens Repeater for OAM Multiplexing Communications

(in English) Recently, a multiplex communication utilizing orbital angular momentum (OAM) of electromagnetic waves has been attracting attention for providing a new multiplexing dimension in wireless communications. In the OAM communication, a multiplex communication with different modes of OAM waves at the same frequency band can be realized without any signal processing, due to the orthogonality between the different OAM modes. The OAM communication system using a circular loop antenna array and a paraboloid can achieve a long-distance communication by focusing the OAM waves. However, the OAM waves from the loop antenna array tend to spread easily, even though those are focused with the paraboloid. So, it is difficult to extend the communication distance. In this study, a dielectric lens has been adopted as a repeater, in order to extend the communication distance. The suitable position of the dielectric lens was estimated based on the parameters such as focal length and curvature of the lens to improve the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR). In the four-channel multiplex communication evaluation at 24.0 GHz with dielectric lens repeater, the measured worst transmission of the signal waves increased by 15.2 dB, and the measured worst SIR value improved by 13.3 dB with a communication distance of 155 cm.
