This paper presents broadband and dual-polarized design of a single-layer ring microstrip antenna (MSA) fed by two L-probes with a via at the center of the radiation element. The proposed antenna consists of a square ring patch as a radiation element and two L-probes to excite two orthogonal modes of the patch. They are arranged on a single-layer dielectric substrate. In order to improve the port-to-port isolation characteristics, a via is introduced at the center of the ring patch. A thick dielectric substrate of 3 mm thickness is used to obtain wideband characteristics. The width of the L-probe and the diameter of the via are tuned appropriately using the electromagnetic simulator ANYSYS HFSS. The simulated result reveals that broadband performance of a fractional bandwidth of 27.1% is obtained at around 12 GHz. Then, a prototype antenna is fabricated. The measured S11 and S22 less than -10 dB are from 10.29 to 13.46 GHz and from 10.12 to 13.27 GHz, respectively. The corresponding fractional bandwidths are 26.7% and 26.9%, respectively. Furthermore, the measured S12 and S21 in the above bandwidths are less than -15.5 dB. It is confirmed by the simulation and the measurement that the proposed single-layer ring MSA fed by two L-probes with a via exhibits good broadband and dual-polarized characteristics. |
