A Study on BGP Routing Operations in the Deployment of ASPA as Path Validation

(in English) Autonomous Systems Path Authorization (ASPA) is a technology for verifying routing information advertised in Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) using the Resource Public Key Infrastructure (RPKI), and the specification is under discussion in the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).
Depending on how ASPA is deployed, it may be difficult to avoid the effects of inappropriate BGP routes since it fails to provide the benefits of path verification.
In this paper, we discuss such situations and their possibility under experimental environments of RPKI and ASPAs.
In particular, we discuss two inherent problems of ASPA.
The first problem is a case where ASPA verification fails to prevent the propagation of inappropriate routes contrary to its expectations.
The second problem is a case where external factors or operational errors affect the ASPA verification operation, which may affect the reachability between BGP routers.
To this end, we also develop an evaluation environment and confirm that these cases cause defects through experiments.
We have also released our implementation via GitHub.
