Investigation of wireless transmission of ECoG to the head surface using backscatter communication

(in English) In recent years, brain machine interface (BMI), which is a device control technology using brain information, has attracted much attention. Since highly accurate brain information is required for the operation of electric prosthesis, the use of cortical electroencephalography (ECoG), in which electrodes are inserted directly into the cerebral cortex, is being considered. In this study, we investigated the feasibility of using backscatter communication as a means of wireless transmission of ECoG measured inside the head. The method is to connect elements with different impedance matching degrees to the ECoG sensing electrodes inside the head and switch them according to the information bits to be transmitted, causing a difference in the reflected and scattered waves of the transmitted signal from outside the body and determining the bit at the receiver. A computer simulation was performed to clarify whether the difference in received power can be measured at the receiver on the head surface when the degree of the impedance matching of the ECoG sensor is switched by using a sphere model that simulates the human head , and the result shows the possibility of using the backscatter communication to transmit ECoG signal to the outside of the head.
