Oil Spill Mapping Using Sentinel-1 SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) in Northern Water of Bintan Island

(in English) Northern water of Bintan Island is an international trade route with high ships mobility. Therefore it has a high risk of oil spill contaminations. The study aims to determine the wide extent area and the volume of oil spill based on oil types using Sentinel-1 SAR data. Data processing is assisted by open-source software SNAP (Sentinel Application Platform ). Oil spill spotted in February 9, 2023 was estimated 25.19 km2 wide area with 15.42 barrel volume. The classification of oil types was determined based on the plot profile value of each pixel in the image. Oil spill with the diesel type was estimated 11.04 km2 wide area with 5.52 barrel volume, the light crude type was estimated 14.11 km2 wide area with 9.87 barrel volume, and the medium crude type was estimated 0.04 km2 wide area with 0.03 barrel volume. The oil spill has a potential for harming aquatic ecosystems, disrupting life of biota, and can even disrupting tourism activities.
