[Invited Lecture] Labor-saving sewer pipe inspection using multiple mobile wireless cameras

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Due to the revision of the Sewerage Law in 2015, inspections are required at least once every five years for sewer pipes at high risk of corrosion, and sewer maintenance costs have become a significant financial issue for local governments. The author’s group has been developing technologies for a safe, low-cost, and labor-saving sewer inspection systems. We have proposed i) a system in which multiple wireless cameras drift down a sewer pipe and forward video data to access points installed in several maintenance holes for semi-real-time video inspection and ii) a system in which multiple unmanned (aerial/ground) vehicles perform real-time video inspection via a wireless multi-hop network built inside the sewer pipe. The reachable distance of wireless LAN signals in small-diameter sewer pipes (200 mm–250 mm diameter), which are the most popular in Japanese public sewer system, is very short, i.e., a few meters with 2.4 GHz band and about 10 meters in 5 GHz band. In order to transmit video data wirelessly from cameras in a pipe to the outside, it is necessary to overcome these short communication distances. This lec- ture introduces technologies related to these systems, wireless LAN link performance in small-diameter sewer pipes, location estimation of drifting cameras, data transmission from drifting cameras to access points, and a protocol for compatibility of unmanned vehicle control communication and video streaming in a wireless multi-hop network.
