[Invited Talk] Research Topics in Programmable Data Planes

(in English) The processing speed of the CPU, which has been a promising platform for packet processing, cannot keep up with the increase in network traffic due to the end of Moore's Law. To solve this problem, a programmable switch has been proposed in 2013, which enables both flexibility and performance with the CPU and the programmable ASIC, and there has been a lot of system research based on programmable data planes, including the programmable switch, the smart NIC, and the hybrid platform composed of them. The applications range from typical network functions such as NAT and firewall to emerging future Internet implementations such as SCION and NDN and offloading of application-layer processing such as KVS and distributed machine learning. In this talk, we first describe the basic architecture of the programmable switch and then present recent research topics in the programmable data plane, including our relevant research activities.
