A Proposal of Commentary Function for Understanding Hard Topics in Java Programming Learning Assistant System

(in English) Nowadays, Java has been used in a variety of application systems as a highly portable object-oriented programming language. To assist self-studies of Java programming by novice students, we have developed the Java programming learning assistant system (JPLAS). The answer interface is implemented on a web browser using HTML/CSS/JavaScript. In Java programming, some concepts, such as generics, lambda expressions, and stream, can be very hard for novices, although they are useful in practical programs. In this study, we propose a commentary function in JPLAS to help students understand such hard topics in Java programming by providing additional explanations and guidance, which are made by using chatGPT to reduce implementation loads. Then, we implement the commentary function at the answer interface for the grammar-concept understanding problem (GUP) in JPLAS, where each question asks the keyword in the given source code by giving the definition. For evaluations, we generated 10 GUP instances with the commentary function, and assigned them to junior students taking the Java programming course in Okayama University, Japan. The results validate the efficacy of the proposal in enhancing understanding levels of challenging topics.
