Collision-less Magnetic Pulse Welding Experiments of Sheet Metals Using Multi-Turn Flat Coil

(in English) Experimental results of collision-less magnetic pulse welding for Al/Cu or Al/Al sheets have already been reported using an H-shaped one-turn flat coil. Here, we report the collision-less magnetic pulse welding method and results using a new E-shaped multi-turn flat coil. Al/Al sheets overlapped together without any gaps are placed and fixed between the multi-turn coil separated above and below. When a discharge current is flowed from the capacitor bank to the narrow center parts of the coil, high-density magnetic flux is suddenly generated on the outside of the Al/Al sheets. Induced eddy currents continue to flow in the sheets, and electromagnetic forces also continue to act. Both sheets are welded using sufficient electromagnetic forces and eddy current heating, similar to magnetic pulse welding by collision. The maximum bank energy and the discharge current required to sufficiently weld two 0.4mm thick Al/Al sheets is 1.0kJ and 66kA. The welded positions are two places left and right away from the center line of the central part, and a wavy morphology unique to collision (or impact) welding is also observed in the interface.
