| （英） | The minimum guesswork quantifies the minimum number of queries needed to guess the value of a random variable, when only one value can be queried at a time. In the presence of classical side information, it is well-known that the optimal decoding strategy consists of querying the values in their decreasing order of posterior probability. When the side information is quantum, however, deriving the optimal decoding strategy requires an optimization over the set of quantum measurements, that is, a continuous NP-hard optimization. Our first result consists of proving that, if the side information is encoded in the state of a single quantum bit, such a continuous optimization is equivalent to a finite combinatorial problem known as quadratic assignment problem, thus settling the minimum guesswork problem in this case. Furthermore, we derive conditions, in terms of a matrix property known as "benevolence", under which the optimal measurement can be found in constant time, and we show that benevolence is satisfied by the states produced in many typical quantum information protocols. | |
