[Invited Lecture] A Study on RIS Installation Effects in Urban Macro-cell Environment

(in English) Currently, the use of RIS (Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface), which enables active control of the direction of radio wave reflections, is being considered for countermeasures against coverage holes and for improving communication quality in the high-frequency band. The effectiveness of RIS in real-world environments has been verified through propagation measurements using prototypes. but is still insufficient. In this paper, we theoretically analyze the effect of RIS installation in an urban macro-cell environment and show that the effect is strongly dependent on the distance between the transmitter and receiver and the height of RIS installation. The validity of the obtained characteristics is evaluated by comparison with a ray-tracing simulation.
