Optimized stimulation for deep brain regions with multi-channel tDCS

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In recent years, there has been a growing interest in non-invasive brain stimulation for medical treatment of brain disease such as depression. The traditional method of non-invasive stimulation of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) injects a week electric current into the brain via a two-electrode pair attached to the scalp to modulate the cortical excitability and is used for stimulating the shallow and deep region of brain. However, it is not straightforward to stimulate the brain region with focality. Recently, multi-channel tDCS which uses multiple electrodes has been proposed to enable more focal stimulation. Electrode conditions for the multi-channel tDCS such as electrode position and current ratio is very complex and are then derived using an optimization algorithm. However, the computational cost of the optimization is high and targeting the deep brain region is challenging. In this study, we proposed using the surface data of electric field in the target region, instead of that over the target volume to reduce the computational cost. The optimization for electric field in deep brain region was performed at group level considering twenty head models.
