Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Epidemiological studies have reported that the prevalence of nuclear cataracts increase with age, especially in tropical and subtropical countries. Ultraviolet irradiation and ambient temperature are suggested as essential environmental contributors, although their quantification is difficult. The aim of this study is to investigate the association of the prevalence of nuclear cataracts with ultraviolet irradiation and heat load. First, we estimated the lens temperature using ambient temperature and relative humidity in the target cities based on large-scale physical computation considering the difference in thermophysiological response due to age and birthplace. We then proposed two metrics for the ultraviolet irradiation and heat load in the ocular region accumulated during lifetime based on weather data and computed lens temperature, while considering the age-dependent decline in lens repair capacity. We also evaluated the effects of ultraviolet irradiation and heat on nuclear cataract using multivariate linear regression analysis. As a result, heat load (CEM43C) significantly contributed to the prevalence at 52%, surpassing the contributions of ultraviolet irradiation (31%) and the decline in lens repair capacity (17%), which suggested heat load is more associated with nuclear cataract.
