This paper presents a novel liquid-immersion multi-fiber connector for data centers. The optical connector is an expanded beam (EB) connector with a graded-index (GRIN) lens array attached to a mechanically transferable (MT) connector. The insertion loss of the fabricated EB connector had a low insertion loss of 1.0 dB or less in both air and a cooling liquid. We measured the insertion loss by changing the gap of the EB connector and clarified that the insertion loss does not change in both air and cooling liquid compared with a conventional MT connector. We also immersed the EB connector in aqueous solutions with varying amounts of mud powder, measured the insertion loss, and clarified that the tolerance for foreign matter in an aqueous solution is greater than that of a conventional MT connector. |
