Frequency-modulated terahertz source made of intrinsic Josephson junctions of high-temperature superconductors

(in English) Terahertz waves are electromagnetic waves in the frequency range between radio waves and light waves, and are expected to be applied to ultrahigh-speed communications. Nowadays, various sources are being studied as a terahertz wave emitter. In this study, we focused on the unique feature of emitter using Intrinsic Josephson Junction of Bi2212 that the radiation frequency is proportional to the bias voltage, and attempted to modulate the frequency of the emitted terahertz wave. As a result, we were successfully observed the frequency spectrum with modulation of a few GHz in different two samples. This result is expected to have various applications not only for ultrahigh-speed communications using terahertz waves, but also as a material for considering the relaxation time of Josephson plasma synchronization and terahertz frequency comb.
