Estimation of Determinism for Imaging Photoplethysmogram

(in English) Photoplethysmography is a method of acquiring biological information by irradiating light onto the fingertip and measuring the amount of reflected or transmitted light. It is used to evaluate such biomedical parameters as heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, etc. This method has the advantages of being very simple, non-invasive, and inexpensive. On the other hand, using an LED light as a light source and a camera as a light receiver, the imaging-type photoplethysmogram can be extracted from the skin surface video. This method can be utilized with commercially available camera devices such as smartphones and can measure heart rates similarly to conventional photoplethysmography. In this study, we clarify whether the deterministic nature of photoplethysmography is observed in imaging photoplethysmogram by the nonlinear time series analysis. To analyze the structure of the signals’ dynamics, simultaneously measured photoplethysmogram and imaging photoplethysmogram’s possible trajectories were reconstructed by transforming signals into the delay coordinates. Next, a recurrent plot was calculated for the reconstructed trajectories, and recurrence quantification analysis was used to estimate the determinism As a result, the mean value of the recurrence quantification analysis index characterizing determinism has demonstrated values indicating determinism and was similar to those of the conventional photoplethysmogram.
