Ghrelin has many physiological functions including sleep-wake regulation and food intake . Previous studies have reported that peripheral administration of ghrelin to female mice significantly increased food intake compared to males indicating a sex difference in food intake. Sex differences in the central effects of ghrelin on rat behavior are, however, remain unclear. In this experiment, sleep-wake activity and food intake were determined after intracerebroventricular (ICV) administration of 0.01, 1, or 10 μg ghrelin to free-feeding rats. ICV administrations of 0.01 μg and 1 μg ghrelin to male rats significantly increased food intake only and both food intake and wakefulness, respectively, compared to females. However, that of 10 μg ghrelin showed no sex differences in wakefulness and food intake. These results suggest that there are sex differences in the central effects of ghrelin in rats, appearing to be more responsive in males than in females, particularly, at lower concentrations. |
