Study on estimating balloon position in the stratosphere using time variation of Iridium satellite positioning information

(in English) We are conducting an experiment to acquire sensor data mounted on a high-altitude balloon flying in the stratosphere using Iridium satellite short burst communication. Although the positioning error is larger than that of GPS, we are considering using the latitude and longitude positioning information provided by Iridium satellites as a redundant system for safe balloon operations. The authors analyzed errors in positioning data over Australia and Antarctica, and found that higher balloon altitudes may increase errors in Iridium satellite positioning. Another issue is that the data provided by Iridium satellites only contains latitude and longitude information, does not include altitude information. In this report, we propose a method to reduce balloon positioning errors based on the time fluctuations in longitude and latitude and error radius of Iridium positioning data during a balloon flight experiment conducted at an altitude of approximately 40 km over Australia in 2018. We also propose a method for easily estimating balloon altitude based on the gap width in the longitudinal direction and the width of variation in the latitude direction.
