Algorithm of evaluating network performance for resilience analysis

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Resilience in engineering is the ability of a system to maintain its functionality and to recover quickly and effectively when a disturbance occurred.
Many studies on the resilience analysis for networks have been conducted, focusing on methods for evaluating the resilience when a specific disturbance occurred and exploring methods to achieve high resilience.
In resilience analysis, it is necessary to evaluate the capability of a network. However, the definitions of network capability vary for each network, and no universally accepted approach to evaluate the network capability. For instance, a capability based on the number of connected nodes is commonly practiced.
However, in the real world, networks, such as power grids, have the designated amount of electric power
that should be supplied to various locations, along with allowable current limits for the transmission lines. The evaluation of network capability based on the number of connected nodes ignores such physical constraints. In this paper, a network model in which nodes have weights and edges have capacities is assumed to deal with the real situation of power grids. The weights correspond to the maximum amount of electric power required by each node, and the sum of the supply to each node is defined as the performance of the network. An algorithm to calculate network performance is proposed, and this algorithm is applied to investigate resilience performance.
