The digital data of a person's whole body movements that wearable sensors can acquire is expected to be utilized in various use cases. However, conventional wearable sensors often use short-range communications such as BLE due to low power consumption requirements. Therefore, there are issues such as the inability to digitize human movements over a wide area (coverage issue) and the inability to target many people due to the limited number of connections (scale-out issue). In a previous study, the authors extended the 5G Sidelink concept to address these issues. They proposed a system architecture that "transparently" accommodates 5G without modifying the existing BLE wearable sensor system. On the other hand, the evaluation is limited to the system's feasibility, and the evaluation of the wide-area capability still needs to be completed. In this paper, we show that data from a large number of people can be efficiently acquired with a low latency of approximately 40 msec over a wide area by conducting a quantitative evaluation of the communication quality in extending the coverage of wearable sensing in a system that implements the previously proposed architecture in local 5G. |
