A Study on Efficiency Improvement by Adjusting Drain Bias Voltage in a Distributed Amplifier

(in English) Increasing the communication capacity and speed is required for recent wireless communication systems.
Currently, many base stations are required for the spread of the 5th generation mobile communication system (5G).
Distributed amplifiers (DisPA) are an option for broadband amplifiers.
In this study, we applied drain-bias voltage to each transistor for saturated operation to improve the drain efficiency of DisPA.
Fabricated DisPA achieved a maximum drain efficiency of 44.3 $%$ and a power-added efficiency (PAE) of 33.2 $%$ from 0.50 to 6.0 GHz with a gain of over 6 dB.
For the DisPA using MMIC, a maximum drain efficiency of 41.2 $%$ and PAE of 35.0 $%$ were obtained from 2.0 to 6.0 GHz with a gain of over 8 dB.
