In this paper, we focus on wireless sensor networks (WSNs) exploiting wake-up receivers, in which a sink node remotely activates sensor nodes through wake-up signaling only when it needs to communicate with the target nodes. Specifically, we consider a scenario where observation areas of sensor nodes overlap with each other, which makes multiple sensor nodes store common sensing data to be transmitted to the sink. In this case, if the sink activates all sensor nodes through wake-up signaling and collects their data, the information on the same observation target is redundantly transmitted, which leads to wasteful energy consumption of each sensor node. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes a wake-up control, where the wake-up receiver of each sensor node detects the existence of redundant data by overhearing the wake-up signaling and data transmissions of the other nodes. Based on the detected information on the redundant data, each sensor node suppresses unnecessary data transmissions and its activation. With numerical results obtained by computer simulations, we show that the proposed wake-up control suppresses the number of redundant transmissions, thereby reducing wasteful energy consumption while keeping low missing rate of sensing data. |
