Evaluation for effectiveness of time precision in a packet monitoring system

(in English) A network monitoring system, which is integrated with a general PC, is widely used for network operation and many kind of experiment since it is easily configured. On the other hand, an internal clock system in a general PC is based on a crystal oscillator. Since such oscillator is not so accurate, we should adjust the clock using other methods, such as NTP. Therefore, the methods to adjust the PC's clock affects accuracy of measured throughput, delay, and other QoS data. However, no evaluation has been executed yet. Therefore, we evaluate time precision of packet capture data that is collected by a packet capture system with its clock adjusted by NTP or PTP by using a real-time 4K video encoder system. We also capture packets from a smartphone to evaluate an effectiveness of clock adjusting method. As a result, we show that we can get 100 nano-seconds time precision for capture data by using PTP as time adjusting method, and we can get 1ms time precision by using both NTP and PTP.
