A Study on QoS Control with Differentiated ECN

(in English) In adaptive video streaming, a user downloads video segments sequentially based on the adaptive bitrate (ABR) algorithm to dynamically adjust their bitrates according to network conditions. Existing ABR algorithms select bitrates based on throughput or buffer occupancy of playout buffer with treating each segment equally. In a video content, there are semantically important parts such as goal scenes in a football game. The ABR algorithm taking account of this {¥it semantics} of video contents has been already proposed, but this approach only focuses on the application layer. When semantics can be treated in the network, this approach will open up a new research direction of network-oriented QoE control. In this paper, we investigate, as the first step of this new research direction, a possibility of allocating network resources when a network router is aware of the applications' semantics. We propose a new ECN marking which differentiates the marking threshold for each flow, which enables network-oriented QoS control. Then, we also evaluate performance of an ABR algorithm with this QoS control mechanism inside the network. Our performance evaluation results show that differentiated throughput performance of our proposed ECN marking enables also differentiation of ABR bitrate selection for each flow. These evaluation results show the possibility of network-oriented semantics QoE control.
