ECN Congestion Control with Gradient of Queue Length for Inter-Datacenter Gateway Proxy

(in English) For data replication and database synchronization, inter-DC (Data Center) communications play an important role. Inter-DC flows share network resources in DC with intra-DC traffic. Congestion control for an intra-DC flow reacts earlier than an inter-DC flow due to its significantly shorter RTT. This leads to unfairness between these flows. This technical problem can occur both of sender-side and receiver-side DCN. In this paper, we focus on the receiver-side DCN because its congestion point is further from the sender when compared with the sender-side DCN. DC-PEP which divides congestion control loop at the receiver-side DCN gateway has been proposed. In this paper, we first evaluate DC-PEP performance with ECN which controls queue length at DC-PEP. Our preliminary evaluation results show that DC-PEP with ECN slightly improves fairness between inter and intra-DC flows, but throughput of an inter-DC flow is regulated by buffer depletion at DC-PEP. In this paper, we propose a new ECN mechanism using queue length gradients, DC-PEP with G-ECN (Gradient-based ECN) which enables prediction of queue length growth and earlier generation of ECN. Our performance evaluation results show that DC-PEP with G-ECN improves throughput performance of inter-DC flows and significantly improves fairness between intra and inter-DC flows.
