Effects of the Doppler shift on synchronization in underwater acoustic communication

(in English) In underwater acoustic communication, the Doppler shifts can degrade demodulation performance more severely than that in terrestrial radio communication due to the slow propagation speeds. Under the severe Doppler shift channels, accurate synchronization plays an important role to establish coherent communication at a high data rate. In this study, simulations were carried out using the m-sequence and Zadoff-Chu sequence codes, which are utilized for synchronization signals in many cases, to investigate how the Doppler shifts affects the synchronization in underwater acoustic communication. The results reveal that Doppler shifts affects synchronization performances depending on characteristics of the utilized synchronization signals. In this paper, simulation results and the mechanism which leads the difference in characteristics and effects are reported.
