Software-Defined Radio-Based Experimental Evaluation of IEEE 802.15.4 SUN OFDM in VHF-band

(in English) Next-generation Internet of Things (IoT) systems require faster data transmission, support for moving objects, and long-distance transmission, compared to the current available IoT systems. The use of IEEE 802.15.4 smart utility network (SUN) Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is considered to satisfy these requirements. The SUN OFDM was originally intended for fixed communications and low mobility, but a receiving scheme for mobile communication has been proposed for urban environments. However, the evaluation of the scheme is mainly based on computer simulations. Furthermore, in the ultra-high frequency (UHF) band represented by 920 MHz, the transmission power in Japan is 20 mW or less; therefore, the transmission distance is at most a few kilometers even in a line-of-sight environment. In this paper, we propose the use of SUN OFDM in the very-high frequency (VHF) band, which has a lower frequency than the currently used UHF band, and conduct an experimental evaluation using software-defined radio that can modify transmitter and receiver functions flexibly.
