The authors have been evaluating differential orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) by means of the experimental results of underwater acoustic communications (UWAC) in shallow sea environments. In this paper, differential OFDM employs multiple differential detection (MDD) with channel prediction. However, the above mentioned experimental results show that MDD with channel prediction suffers from performance degradation due to low signal to noise power ratio (SNR). In order to mitigate this degradation, this paper derives parameter for MDD with channel prediction suitable for low SNR. Computer simulation results show that the derived parameter improves performance of differential OFDM at low SNR. Next, MDD with channel prediction using the derived parameter improves the bit error rate performance of experiments in an actual shallow sea environment. |
