This paper introduces research and development of self-managed wireless networks using drones in mountainous areas.
To investigate the propagation characteristics of 2.4-GHz-band wireless LAN, we measured the received signal strength indicator (RSSI) and throughput of air-to-air and ground-to-air channels in a plain area where the influence of the terrain is small. As a result, it was shown that a throughput of 3 Mbps could be achieved at an altitude of 20 m and a distance of 400 m for the air-to-air channel and about 20 Mbps at an altitude of 30 m and a distance of 2,900 m for the ground-to-air channel.
In a desktop study using a geographic information system (GIS) under supporting real-world conditions, the system configuration and its feasibility could be examined by confirming the line-of-sight (LoS) of the propagation path using GIS.
From the experimental results of 920-MHz-band LPWA in a mountainous area,
the propagation loss index was 2.72 in the LOS environment and 4.10 in the non-line-of-sight (NLOS) environment. In NLOS, the propagation loss index decreased with the drone's altitude. The packet loss ratio in LOS did not change significantly with drone altitude. |
