Improved PSMNet for accurate disparity estimation for objects at close range

(in English) Depth estimation using stereo cameras has been used in various fields. Stereo cameras with narrow baselines are now available and are expected to be applied to objects at short distances. However, disparity estimation at close range is not sufficiently accurate with conventional methods because the corresponding disparity between the left and right images is large and it is difficult to match them with conventional image features. In this study, for estimating more accurate disparity of near objects, we propose an improved method of PSMNet, which has been reported to have high performance as a disparity estimation method. PSMNet consists of two main modules: the SPP module for capturing global features and the Stacked hourglass for regularizing cost volumes. In this study, we have extended these two modules to improve the accuracy of disparity estimation. We also have created a dataset for disparity estimation at short distances, which is not included in the existing dataset, and evaluation experiments show that these modifications are effective in improving the performance of disparity estimation at short distances.
