Eigenvalue Analysis of Radio Propagation Utilizing Hollow Cylindrical Concrete Structures in Sea Water

(in English) This paper reports the results of an eigenmode analysis of radio propagation using a hollow cylindrical concrete structure submerged in the sea. The attenuation is so high in sea water that communication is limited to a very small area. Although communication through tethers containing optical fibers is effective for transmitting high-capacity data such as images, it may limit the range of motion of underwater drones in applications such as maintenance of concrete installed under the sea, so it is desirable to make communication partially wireless. To shed light on this problem, the authors conceived of transmitting radio waves along the hollow cylindrical concrete structure placed in sea water. In this paper, some of the eigenmodes that may exist in the concrete structure under the sea are analytically investigated, and it is shown that a cutoff phenomenon appears in the frequency characteristics of the attenuation constant as a transmission line for its higher-order modes, and that the attenuation constant for higher-order modes with similar distributions tends to degenerate beyond the cutoff frequency.
