Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The present study aims to strengthen user’s sense of embodiment (SoE) towards avatars in virtual reality (VR) with a mental preparation protocol. The proposed protocol involves three components applied before the VR experience: providing information about the avatar, engaging users in imagining and embodying their avatar, and conducting an acting exercise to impersonate the avatar physically.
Our hypothesis is that mental preparation can help users build a strong SoE and enhance the Proteus effect. To test it, 40 participants embodied the avatar of the Hulk from the Marvel franchise. We assessed SoE through a questionnaire and monitored the Proteus Effect as a secondary measure. The SoE questionnaire consisted of 16 questions comprising items for appearance, response, ownership, multisensory, and global embodiment. The Proteus effect was assessed by measuring punch speed when breaking rocks during the VR experience. The results indicated that, when participants had a pre-existing familiarity with the Hulk and underwent mental preparation, the Proteus effect was enhanced. However, no significant differences were observed self-reported SoE.
