We proposed a reconfigurable-intelligent-surface (RIS)-based electronic phantom (RePH) for an over-the-air (OTA) testing system of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar. This method can reconstruct the MIMO radar channel, measured and recorded in advance, only controlling the variable load connecting the RIS array. In this paper, we propose the variable load circuit which can control the amplitude/phase of the reflection coefficient of the variable load independently by only controlling the phase of the variable phase shifter. The proposed circuit consists of variable phase shifters connected to the in-phase and quadrature ports of a 90-degree hybrid coupler, and this circuit is implemented on a flat surface to simplify the load. The reflection coefficient of the prototyped variable load circuit realized less than 0.80 value, and this circuit can control the load only -1.5 dB loss and 0◦ ∼ 360◦ of phase. The accuracy of channel reconstruction using the proposed variable load is comparable to the case of using an ideal load which controls the amplitude and phase of the reflection coefficients continuously. |
